Overview
- Selected by the Steersperson in Training (SIT). You have the right to decline.
- Confirms the SIT clearly meets or exceeds the prerequisites outlined on the website.
- Also considers the following abilities which are largely self-developed and are evaluated by undocumented observation. By nature they are more subjective but no less important than the skills and knowledge that are part of the final evaluation.
- Does the candidate have a personality that can command and control a crew?
- Does the candidate demonstrate decisiveness?
- Does the candidate demonstrate good judgment concerning risk and abilities?
- Does the candidate demonstrate willingness to help other club members improve?
- Does the candidate demonstrate knowledge and responsibility concerning club assets and rules?
- Oversees, guides and encourages the SIT throughout the steering process. SIT sets pace.
- Checks in with the SIT periodically on training status, questions, concerns, needs.
- ASM may be involved in training but is not the primary; there is no primary trainer.
- Ensures that SIT is training with a minimum of 3 Supervising Accredited Steerspeople (SAS).
- Checks in with SASs about SIT progress periodically.
- Responds promptly to communications received from Steering Coordinator (SC).
- Consults with the SC if concerned about the SIT.
- Reviews SIT log periodically.
- Confirms readiness with SASs for the SIT’s Final Evaluation paddle for Spec OC6.
Final Evaluation Paddle: 1.5 – 2 hours duration
- Reviews/discusses completed open-book test with SIT prior to the paddle.
- Reviews steering log with SIT prior to the paddle.
- Confirms with the Steering Coordinator (SC) that the test and log have been reviewed.
SIT keeps both. - Is in the canoe during the paddle with 2 other Accredited Steersperson Evaluators (ASE)
- Ensures that all competencies on the checklist are demonstrated and witnessed by all ASEs.
- Facilitates discussion with ASEs post paddle.
- Communicates with SC post paddle regarding status of accreditation.
- Ensures all ASEs understand how to properly complete checklists and the importance of sending them to the SC (via text or email) within 24 hours.
The SC will ensure that SIT sees all the completed checklists and will communicate with the BOD, President on the status of accreditation.
