Rigging / Stowing the OC-1

OC-1 Rigging

The iako are locked into the canoe and ama by small spring pins in the iako that snap into retaining holes. When sliding the iako into the mounting hole always depress the spring pin with your finger first to slide it in. Never just bang the iako in to depress the spring. Sometimes it can be tricky to get everything in. One way to do it is to insert both iako into the canoe first. These iako offer no adjustment here, there is only one way they go in. Next push the rear iako into the ama, for all but the most expert paddler you want this all the way down in the bottom hole. You may find it easier to get the front one in if you leave the front of the ama turned outwards a bit, even if this means the rear spring pin is not engaged yet.

Next insert the front iako into the ama by straightening the ama towards the canoe while pressing the spring pin down with your finger. This may be hard to snap in but never bang the ama to get it in. Check the rear iako pin has clicked into its hole.

Secure the leash on the front iako.

Check the radio is charged and secure the drybag.

It is a requirement that club OC1/OC2 paddlers wear a PFD.

Check that the rudder is straight as handing the canoe can twist it so far that the pedals may not be able to move it without damaging the cables. This is a good time to double check everything!

Place into the water carefully.

Adjust the seat using this cleat. Straighter legs means more stability (but less power).

OC-1 De-rigging

Carefully remove the canoe from the water and hang the rudder off the edge of the dock like before.

Rinse the canoe, ama and iako with fresh water. Wipe down with the towel. Look for any new damage.

Remove the rear iako from the ama by pressing the pin down and lifting. Remove the front iako from the ama by pressing the pin down, then while  holding the ama with both hands, push the end of the iako back through the ama hole  with both thumbs. Never bang the ama to get it out. Remove both iako from the canoe by pressing the pins down and pulling out.

OC-1 Stowing

Stow the front iako, leash, dry bag and PFD in the deck box.

If you notice any water inside the canoe or ama drain it out by loosening the drain plugs.

Stow the canoe upside down on the outer cradle with the bow towards the harbor entrance.

Stow the rear iako in the rack and the ama rear side down like this.
