Presenters: Amy Culver and Dave Waynar
Topic: How Ocean Forces Effect Steering Decisions; The Physics of the Hawaiian Canoe; Na Wahine O’ Ke Kai 2012 (time permitting).
For those of you who may not know Amy, she has been an OSC Women’s Coach taking women’s crews to the Na Wahine O’Ke Kai, the nortorious Molokai to Oahu race Raised in Hawaii, within a family of paddlers, Amy started paddling at the age of 9. Her amazing coaches including Nappy (our OC6 is named after him; Brudda Nappy), Billy Whitford, and Tema Tahi led her into international racing. Amy’s Father/Coach Mike Gayle has been in Nappy’s crew for 40 years with wins both at Molo and Catalina. If I remember correctly, Mike started the Nor Cal club He’e Nalu(?). A few of Amy’s many highlights in paddling include placing 2nd in the World Sprints at the age of 15; steering a crew of Australians and New Zealanders for her first Molokai at the age of 17, placing 5th; leading, steering an OSC crew for Catalina finishing 1st in women’s masters. We are most fortunate to have her in our community.
As you know, Dave Waynar is our 2018 Head Coach. Dave was on the escort boat in 2012 as Coach for the 2012 Na Wahine O’ Ke Kai.
Those in the steering class bring your logbooks for question and answer time with advisors present after the presentations. As usual, the night will be full; breaks will be given.
